The Genesis X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible have taken another step toward potential production after receiving U.S. design patents. The filings do not confirm that either concept will reach showrooms, but they show Genesis is protecting the designs in one of its most important markets.

Genesis Concepts Start With the G90

When Genesis unveiled the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible last year, both concepts immediately stood apart from conventional design studies. Rather than looking purely futuristic, the two cars appeared close enough to production to potentially fit into a dealership lineup.

That resemblance is rooted in their origins. Both concepts began as the Genesis G90, the brand’s flagship luxury sedan, before receiving dramatic two-door transformations.

The X Gran Coupe replaces the G90’s rear doors with a sleek fastback design, while the X Gran Convertible transforms the sedan into an open-air cruiser with a fabric roof.

Genesis has not confirmed any production plans for either vehicle. However, the new U.S. design patents indicate that the company wants to protect the shapes of the two concepts.

U.S. Patent Drawings Show Production-Like Details

The patent filings were published in August and were first spotted by the Korean Car Blog. The drawings show both concepts from multiple angles, including the front, rear, side and top.

The X Gran Coupe features a long hood, low roofline, frameless windows, flush door handles and a pronounced shoulder line running along the body. Its front end carries the signature Genesis Crest Grille and thin Two-Line headlights.

At the rear, the coupe has a clean bumper, full-width taillights and a subtle lip spoiler.

The X Gran Convertible retains most of those design elements while replacing the hardtop with a soft roof. Its patent drawings show a redesigned rear deck for the folding roof, a modified greenhouse and wheels that differ from those used on the coupe.

Together, the patent drawings show concepts that remain close to production-ready proportions. Neither features extreme proportions or futuristic bodywork, instead combining realistic shapes with styling based on the G90.

Genesis Has Not Confirmed Production

Despite the U.S. patent filings, there is still no confirmation that the Genesis X Gran Coupe or X Gran Convertible will enter production. A U.S. design patent protects a vehicle’s appearance, but it does not confirm its engine or whether the vehicle will ultimately be sold.

Automakers can also patent ambitious concepts to protect their designs even when those vehicles never reach showrooms.

Genesis describes the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible as new interpretations of the G90 rather than entirely new models. Their familiar proportions, signature lighting and luxury-focused designs give both concepts a natural connection to the brand’s flagship sedan.

For now, the production future of the two concepts remains uncertain. Genesis has nevertheless secured U.S. design protection for the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible, preserving the designs as the company considers their potential future.
