The next-generation BMW 3 Series is nearing its world premiere, and BMW is revealing more about what will make the new generation different. The G50 3 Series will feature a greater use of recycled and recyclable materials, including components made with renewable resources.
BMW 3 Series Embraces Recycled Materials
After months of spy shots, BMW recently offered a preview of the next-generation 3 Series while the car was still covered in camouflage. It was later spotted uncovered in Munich, although BMW has not yet announced an exact launch date.
BMW describes the approach as a “systematic use of secondary materials,” and the strategy extends beyond a small number of panels. The company says recycled materials will also be used for more heavy-duty components.
For the G50 3 Series, the wheels, swivel bearings, and wheel supports will be made using secondary materials. The process used to form these parts also relies on renewable resources, with the goal of reducing emissions during parts production and assembly.
BMW also says the hood will be made from 70% recycled aluminum, helping reduce waste during construction. Overall, the new car will feature 25% secondary materials.
Building on the BMW i3
The new BMW 3 Series builds on the approach already used for the i3 and, by extension, the iX3. The i3 currently has 31% secondary material content.
BMW has also applied the same approach to other vehicles. The updated 7 Series and i7, along with the fully redesigned X5 built in South Carolina, have used this strategy as well.
BMW May Expand the Approach
BMW could use the same manufacturing approach on more models, including the updated 5 Series, which may be due pretty soon.
The company may also move away from carbon fiber in the future. The M Neue Klasse Concept previewed a different type of natural fiber that is described as being just as strong as carbon while also being recyclable.
BMW is developing this material as the EU has proposed banning non-recyclable materials in vehicles. Carbon fiber has been excluded for now, but it could still be included again. If that happens, BMW will be ready with an alternative approach.
As the next-generation BMW 3 Series approaches its world premiere, the company is highlighting its increased use of recycled and recyclable materials as a key part of the new model.
