The Nissan Pathfinder XE-V6 Concept brings the rugged spirit of the original D21 Pathfinder to the modern era with a series of off-road upgrades and classic styling. The one-off build is part of Nissan’s three-vehicle lineup for the SEMA Show, alongside the Frontier Ronin Concept and Armada Jungle Patrol Concept.
Nissan Pathfinder XE-V6 Concept Pays Tribute to the D21
The Pathfinder has undergone significant changes throughout its history. It began as a Hardbody pickup-based SUV in the 1980s before transitioning to a unibody design in the 1990s while retaining truck-style suspension.
In the 2000s, the Pathfinder returned to a truck-based platform derived from the Frontier. Today, it has evolved into a crossover SUV with a different focus from its rugged predecessors.
Although the current Pathfinder remains a capable choice in its segment, it is no longer primarily designed for off-road adventures. The Rock Creek Edition adds all-terrain tires and improved traction for rough surfaces, but its approach differs significantly from that of the original D21.
Nissan’s XE-V6 concept revisits that earlier identity through a one-off build inspired by one of the original Pathfinder’s lower trim levels.
The XE-V6 was designed as a straightforward, affordable model that offered useful comfort features while retaining the rugged character of the original SUV.
Pathfinder XE-V6 Concept Gets a Four-Inch Lift
The most noticeable modification is a custom four-inch suspension lift, paired with spacers that allow the chunky mud-terrain tires to extend farther beyond the body.
The concept also features custom front and rear bumpers, along with rock sliders that complement its tougher appearance.
Although the current Pathfinder is no longer a body-on-frame SUV, the XE-V6 name still has a connection to its powertrain. The concept retains the current model’s V6 engine, which has been left unchanged.
Nissan has added a prototype NISMO cat-back exhaust system, while the rest of the build focuses on off-road equipment.
Additional upgrades include driving lights, a roof rack, a spare tire carrier, a winch and underbody protection.
Classic Pathfinder Graphics Return
The original XE-V6 was available with a graphics package, and Nissan has brought that distinctive styling element back for the SEMA concept.
The side decals recall the graphics featured on older Pathfinder models, giving the modern build a recognizable connection to its heritage.
Combined with the suspension lift, rugged tires and off-road accessories, the graphics help blend classic Pathfinder styling with contemporary modifications.
Could the Concept Preview Future Nissan Off-Road SUVs?
The XE-V6 concept also brings attention to the upcoming Frontier-based Pathfinder. A more rugged, squared-off SUV equipped with similar upgrades could offer a different direction for the nameplate.
The concept may also provide an early glimpse of customization possibilities for future truck-based Pathfinder and Xterra models, although those vehicles are still a few years away.
For now, the Nissan Pathfinder XE-V6 Concept demonstrates how the automaker is revisiting the original SUV’s off-road character through a modern one-off build.
