Ford’s upcoming affordable electric pickup, the Fathom, is targeting a starting price of $28,350, with multiple versions expected to keep the entire lineup below $40,000. The electric truck is scheduled to make its world premiere in the second half of 2027, as Ford prepares to attract EV shoppers and drivers considering a switch from gasoline or hybrid vehicles.
Ford Fathom EV Truck Could Start Below $30,000
Ford has been building anticipation for the Fathom, releasing official spy shots and showcasing the prototype on multiple occasions. The company has also launched a teaser website highlighting features that may appear on the production model.
Preorders are expected to open early next year, ahead of the truck’s planned world premiere during the second half of 2027.
Ford CEO Jim Farley offered an early glimpse of the pickup’s capabilities during a call with Wall Street analysts, describing the vehicle as a major development for the company.
“It completely blew me away. Zero to 60 is huge … and the hands free experience was like something I’ve never experienced. Fathom is really a breakthrough product. It’s highly capable, innovative, affordable,” Farley said.
Farley also reiterated that the Fathom would start below $30,000. The teaser website currently lists a target starting price of $28,350, although that figure could change before the truck reaches the market.
Ford Fathom Will Offer Multiple Versions
The Fathom will not be limited to a single configuration. Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Ford Model e, confirmed that the electric pickup will be offered in several versions, although the company has not yet disclosed how many variants will be available.
Frick said the lineup would extend into the upper $30,000 range, giving buyers multiple options at different price points.
“We’ll have a range that goes to the high $30,000 range. And we’ll have a couple different offerings within that,” Frick said.
If Ford maintains its planned starting price, the Fathom could have a price spread of roughly $10,000 across the lineup, leaving room for different trims and options.
The company is targeting customers who want the utility of a pickup, along with drivers considering a move from gasoline-powered or hybrid vehicles to an EV.
Ford Expects Fathom to Attract EV, Hybrid and Gas Buyers
Ford believes the Fathom’s affordability and utility could help it reach beyond existing electric vehicle customers.
Frick said the company expects the pickup to appeal to new and used EV buyers, as well as gasoline and hybrid vehicle owners.
He said the truck is expected to offer operating costs significantly lower than those of even a mainstream hybrid vehicle.
Ford’s plan to keep the entire Fathom lineup below $40,000 is a central part of its effort to expand its presence in the electric vehicle market.
Fathom Uses Ford’s New UEV Platform
The Fathom will ride on Ford’s UEV architecture, short for Universal Electric Vehicle platform.
The platform is a clean-sheet design developed by a skunkworks team based in Long Beach, California.
Ford has invested heavily in the new architecture, making the Fathom’s success important to the company’s broader plans for the platform.
If the electric pickup performs well, the UEV architecture could potentially support additional affordable models, including electric crossovers and sedans.
The Fathom is expected to play a key role in Ford’s affordable EV strategy, with a targeted starting price of $28,350 and a planned debut in the second half of 2027.
