Mercedes-Benz is taking aim at the luxury MPV market with the new VLE, positioning its next-generation people carrier as a premium vehicle rather than a van. The company is betting that the approach can attract buyers who would not normally consider the segment, with UK pricing expected to start around £75,000, or roughly $100,000.
A Major Step Up From the V-Class
The VLE is built on Mercedes’ new VAN.EA electric architecture, marking a departure from the Vito-based EQV and the combustion-powered V-Class it replaces.
The single-motor VLE 300 produces 272 hp from a 115kWh battery pack and offers roughly 440 miles of WLTP range, equivalent to approximately 320-340 miles on the U.S. EPA cycle. The dual-motor VLE 400 4Matic adds all-wheel drive and increases output to 416 hp.
Both versions use an 800-volt electrical system capable of adding up to 220 miles of range in 15 minutes at a fast charger. Those specifications represent a significant step beyond the outgoing EQV and reflect technology also found across Mercedes’ sedan and SUV lineup.
Mercedes Wants to Build a New Luxury Segment
Luxury MPVs remain a niche segment in Europe and North America, while chauffeur-focused models have become established status symbols in other markets. In China, models including the Lexus LM, Volvo EM90 and BYD’s Denza D9 compete for buyers similar to those Mercedes hopes to attract in the UK.
Mercedes-Benz Vans head Thomas Klein described the VLE as the beginning of a broader repositioning for the division, saying the brand is “redefining a whole segment” with its launch.
Mercedes-Maybach VLS Will Sit Above the VLE
Mercedes also plans to offer an even more expensive model above the VLE. The Mercedes-Maybach VLS, described as a “Grand Limousine,” is expected to cost more than $200,000, or around £147,000, when it arrives.
That would give Mercedes a two-tier luxury van lineup, following a strategy similar to its Maybach sedan and SUV range. The VLE is not expected to reach the U.S. until 2027 or 2028.
Whether buyers in the UK or U.S. ultimately embrace either model remains to be seen. For now, Mercedes is positioning the VLE and Mercedes-Maybach VLS as evidence that the luxury MPV market can support vehicles positioned well above the segment’s current sales levels.
