Volkswagen has teased the 2027 Amarok for South America, revealing a radically different approach to the mid-size pickup truck compared with the model offered in Europe and Australia. The heavily camouflaged truck was shown at the Festa do Peão de Barretos agricultural show, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain reportedly delivering roughly 470 horsepower.
South American Amarok Takes a Different Path
Motor1 Brazil reports that Volkswagen is developing the South American Amarok separately from the Ford-based pickup offered in Europe and Australia. Rather than using Ford architecture, the new truck reportedly relies on Chinese underpinnings sourced from SAIC.
The Amarok is said to share its core structural bones with the Maxus Interstellar X. The platform reportedly brings a stretched 130-inch wheelbase and a wider track, creating more cabin space while allowing Volkswagen to introduce electrification without compromising payload limits.
Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain Reportedly Delivers 470 HP
The flagship version is expected to carry an 800 TSI badge, signaling an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain. According to the report, the system produces roughly 470 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.
The electrified all-wheel-drive system is also reportedly capable of accelerating the pickup to sixty miles per hour faster than a Porsche Panamera.
Volkswagen is also expected to offer a 2.5-liter turbodiesel variant alongside the hybrid model. The diesel version is intended to support agricultural sectors that play an important role in local sales.
Volkswagen Has Tested Other Amarok-Based Ideas
The company has previously developed a hidden seven-seat SUV prototype based on the older Amarok chassis as it explored the possibility of an Everest rival.
The latest Amarok strategy highlights Volkswagen’s willingness to pursue different approaches for its utility vehicles across global markets, with the South American truck receiving technology and engineering distinct from its European and Australian counterpart.
Will the Amarok Come to the U.S.?
The 470-horsepower hybrid Amarok is being developed specifically for the South American market, while Volkswagen executives have repeatedly indicated that the company is considering a pickup intended for the United States.
Despite years of speculation and conceptual teases, Volkswagen officially has no concrete plan to launch a combustion or hybrid truck in the U.S. anytime soon. Meanwhile, the General Pacheco plant in Argentina is undergoing major investments to build the plug-in hybrid Amarok for its regional market.
For now, the South American 2027 Amarok remains a market-specific Volkswagen pickup, with no confirmed U.S. launch plan.
