Ferrari is preparing to expand the F80 lineup in two very different directions, with an open-roof “Aperta” version reportedly in the works alongside a track-oriented F80XX. The high-performance hybrid has now been spotted testing at the Algarve International Circuit, better known as Portimao, revealing its heavily camouflaged bodywork and aggressive aerodynamic package.

Ferrari F80XX Brings Serious Downforce

The Ferrari F80XX, or potentially FXX80 depending on which new trademark the company ultimately uses, is expected to follow the approach established by the SF90 XX and FXX-K. That means a substantially more comprehensive aerodynamic package designed around increased downforce.

Photos posted to r/whatsthiscar by Reddit user u/Signal-Duck3305 clearly show a large swan-neck rear wing. The wing is expected to play a major role in the car’s aerodynamic performance, although it remains unclear whether Ferrari will use active aero such as a drag reduction system or make the wing manually adjustable.

The front end also appears to have undergone significant changes. The prototype features a revised front fascia with an S-duct bonnet, a protruding chin spoiler and small dive planes.

At the rear, a large diffuser and larger side skirts should help move air from underneath the car and direct it away from the body. The low-resolution images and camouflage make it difficult to identify every change, but the prototype may also feature revised bodywork intended to improve airflow around the vehicle.

More Power Could Be Coming

U/Signal-Duck3305 also captured video of the prototype testing, providing a clear recording of its engine note from outside the circuit’s third corner, known as Lagos.

The 3.0-liter, 120-degree V6 mounted in the middle sounds more aggressive than the main-series F80, with additional snarl particularly noticeable through the engine’s mid-range. At higher engine speeds, its sound even resembles that of a Formula 1 car.

The track-focused F80 is expected to produce more power than the standard model, which generates 1,184 horsepower from its 888-hp V6 and three electric motors.

Ferrari could extract additional output from the gasoline engine, although its 296 hp per liter already leaves uncertainty over how much more power the V6 can provide. Additional electrical output appears more likely, with the total potentially reaching 1,250 horsepower or more.

How the F80XX Could Differ From Earlier XX Cars

Despite the improved sound captured in the Portimao video, the F80XX’s hybrid V6 does not have the same aural character as earlier Ferrari XX Programme cars.

The original Enzo-based FXX, along with the 599XX and FXX-K, was not road-legal, making direct comparisons between their unrestricted V12 engines and the F80XX’s V6 difficult.

The SF90 XX Stradale offers another point of comparison. Its twin-turbocharged, plug-in hybrid 4.0-liter V8 has a distinctive sound while complying with legislative requirements.

Road Legal or Track Only?

It remains unclear whether the Ferrari F80XX will be exclusively for track use or whether it will be street-legal. The SF90 XX was the first car in its lineage to include provisions for a license plate.

There is still uncertainty surrounding the F80XX’s specifications, launch date, starting price and production numbers. For now, the prototype testing at Portimao offers the clearest look yet at Ferrari’s track-focused direction for the F80.
