The Porsche 911 Challenge offers a more accessible entry into Porsche’s racing lineup, delivering 508 horsepower and extensive track-focused equipment for $275,000. Positioned below the $375,000 911 GT4 R, the Challenge is designed to give amateur racers a proper competition car without reaching the GT4 R’s price.
A More Accessible Porsche Race Car
Porsche unveiled the 911 GT4 R a few months ago as the successor to the Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Built strictly as a race car, the GT4 R is aimed at buyers looking to go professional and establish a race team.
For those who find its $375,000 price too high, Porsche offers the 911 Challenge for $275,000. The model sits at the first step of the racing 911 ladder, followed by the GT4 R and eventually the Cup.
How the 911 Challenge Differs From the GT3
The 911 Challenge retains several elements found in the GT3 road car. Its power output remains at 508 hp, while a racing exhaust with a catalytic converter is added.
The car also uses the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which can be left in automatic mode when needed. However, Porsche gives the Challenge a more aggressive suspension setup, while its braking technology comes directly from the 911 Cup.
Slick tires further emphasize the car’s competition-focused design. Unlike the GT3, though, the 911 Challenge continues to use five-lug wheels rather than a center-lock setup.
Track-Focused Interior and Safety Equipment
The 911 Challenge is not stripped down to the same extent as the GT4 R or the Cup, but much of its interior has been removed. The trims, carpets and sound deadening are gone, while power seats and a passenger-side seat are not part of the package.
A beefier roll cage is also included. Surprisingly, Porsche has retained the air-conditioning system despite the car’s extensive weight-saving measures.
The competition car is equipped with a 29-gallon FIA FT3 fuel cell. Its sole seat is an adjustable racing bucket paired with a six-point harness, while a fire-extinguishing system is included as part of the competition equipment.
How Much Does the Porsche 911 Challenge Cost?
The Porsche 911 Challenge carries a $275,000 price tag. That makes it less expensive than a Turbo S Cabriolet, which has a $284,300 base price, and puts it in the same ballpark as the GT3 S/C at $273,000.
It is more expensive than the standard GT3, which starts at $235,800. But unlike those road-focused models, the 911 Challenge is built for the track and is not street legal.
