The upcoming smaller Defender crossover, expected to be called the Defender Sport or Defender 80, has been spotted with an external spare wheel for the first time, reinforcing its connection to the Defender name. The so-called “baby Defender” will ride on JLR’s all-new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform and is expected to launch with hybrid power before an all-electric version arrives later.

Defender Sport Expected to Get Hybrid Power

Recent reports out of England indicate that JLR is preparing a hybrid version of the Defender Sport/Defender 80 after taking note of relatively lackluster demand for EVs. While perceptions of all-electric vehicles continue to improve, the automaker is expected to use the new platform for both hybrid and electric powertrains.

JLR has said the EMA platform will support hybrid power, with an all-electric version to follow. Based on that strategy, the baby Defender is expected to launch as a hybrid sometime in 2027, with the EV version following in the second half of the year.

A similar approach is likely for the next Range Rover Velar and Evoque, which are also expected to arrive on the EMA platform next year.

New Defender Built on JLR’s EMA Platform

Unlike the recently revealed Range Rover Electric, which shares its architecture with the combustion-powered Range Rover, the baby Defender is being developed on an entirely new platform: JLR’s Electric Modular Architecture.

The EMA platform will also underpin a new Range Rover. JLR has spun off Land Rover, Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender as sub-brands.

The latest spy images show the smaller Defender with an external spare wheel, a feature that further emphasizes its intended identity as a Defender.

Off-Road Capability Remains a Focus

JLR has not revealed or hinted at output figures for the smaller Defender. The vehicle is expected to pursue the original Defender’s off-road capability, potentially using a dual-motor setup to provide all-wheel drive.

As a smaller vehicle, the Defender Sport/Defender 80 will face inherent compromises, particularly in wheel articulation and travel. However, buyers choosing a crossover of this size are typically less focused on tackling trails than those who select a mid-to-full-size SUV.

Defender Sport Faces Competition From Baby G-Class

Mercedes is making a similar move with its baby G-Class, which is aimed at the same audience as the baby Defender. Mercedes has decided to add a hybrid alternative because that is what American buyers want.

The competition could make the positioning of the smaller Defender more challenging. JLR will need to balance a more affordable and attainable product with the prestige and luxury associated with the Defender name.

Defender Sport Design Mirrors the Defender 90

The shape and proportions of the smaller Defender remain true to those of the existing Defender 90, while its lighting units also appear likely to be very similar.

Given the popularity of the boxy SUV, particularly in America, the smaller Defender has the potential to become a strong success. However, its pricing, interior space, and performance both on and off the beaten path will be important factors.

For now, the expected early 2027 launch remains the anticipated timing for the new Defender Sport/Defender 80, with the hybrid version expected first and the all-electric model to follow in the second half of the year.
