Honda’s long-standing reputation for durable vehicles is facing new pressure as engine-related problems affect several models and now extend to the CB1000 Hornet SP motorcycle, which is being recalled over excessive oil consumption. The issues involve different engines and markets, but together they represent a growing series of reliability concerns for the automaker.
Honda’s Engine Recalls Continue
Honda recently extended the head gasket warranty on a long list of Civic, CR-V, and Accord models to 10 years or 150,000 miles, compared with the usual five-year, 60,000-mile coverage.
The warranty extension addresses premature head gasket failure in the 1.5-liter turbo and 2.0-liter hybrid engines. The problem can appear through an overheating gauge, while the resulting repair bill can climb past $8,000.
The situation also involves Honda’s J35 V6. Honda recalled around 250,000 vehicles over connecting rod bearing failures, and federal regulators subsequently opened a fresh investigation covering 1.4 million Honda and Acura models.
In one teardown of a recalled Odyssey, bearing damage appeared to extend beyond what the recall addressed. That left the owner facing the possibility of a replacement engine.
CB1000 Hornet SP Joins the Recall Issues
The engine-related concerns have now moved beyond Honda’s four-wheel vehicles. The CB1000 Hornet SP is being recalled in multiple markets after owners reported excessive oil consumption.
According to MCN, Honda traced the motorcycle’s problem to out-of-spec pistons and piston rings. If the oil level becomes low enough, the issue could eventually lead to connecting rod failures.
What the Honda Reliability Problems Mean
The problems involve different engines, factories and continents, and they are not related on paper. That makes the broader pattern notable because Honda is dealing with several high-profile reliability issues across different parts of its business rather than a single engine problem.
Honda’s reliability reputation was not built on the idea that its engines would never experience problems. Instead, those problems were expected to remain exceptions. As more issues require explanations, maintaining that reputation becomes increasingly difficult.
With recalls, warranty extensions and investigations involving multiple Honda and Acura models, the automaker is facing a series of engine-related reliability concerns affecting both its cars and motorcycles.
