The Lexus GX 550 has received an extreme off-road transformation, turning the luxury SUV into a heavily modified adventure machine. The MTN 550 Recon features 40-inch tires, portal axles, upgraded suspension components, and specialized equipment designed to handle challenging terrain.
While the Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner remain popular choices among off-road enthusiasts, the Lexus GX is gaining attention as another capable platform. Both current and previous GX models share their underlying identity with the Land Cruiser Prado, the smaller of Toyota’s two main Land Cruiser lines. The latest GX also comes with a significantly more powerful engine than its Toyota counterpart.
A Lexus GX 550 Built for Extreme Off-Road Driving
The MTN 550 Recon stands out with its subdued matte black finish and practical exterior modifications. However, its enormous ground clearance and oversized tires are the most noticeable features.
The SUV rides on forged beadlock wheels wrapped in 40-inch tires, larger than those available on any factory Wrangler or Raptor. Accommodating this combination required extensive suspension and drivetrain modifications.
Several suspension components have been replaced with 74Weld billet aluminum parts. Portal axles from the same company have also been installed on both the front independent axles and the solid rear axle, further increasing ground clearance.
An aftermarket front locking differential adds to the vehicle’s off-road capabilities. A concealed front-mounted winch provides additional equipment for situations involving obstacles the SUV cannot overcome on its own.
Steel Bumpers, Skid Plates and Advanced Equipment
The exterior modifications include custom steel front and rear bumpers, steel fender flares, and rock sliders. Full-length skid plates with heavy-duty plastic liners help protect the underside while allowing the vehicle to slide over difficult obstacles.
Other details include dual stainless steel snorkels with a compact design that closely follows the body’s contours. The exhaust tip has also been cut flush with the rear steel bumper.
The SUV carries numerous auxiliary lights and cameras mounted on its roof rack and bumpers. Attached to actuators, these components can be controlled from inside the cabin.
Some of the cameras also feature thermal night vision technology, providing additional visibility in completely dark conditions.
A High-Tech Interior With Biometric Security
The interior takes a much bolder approach than the relatively understated exterior. Black and red leather and Alcantara cover the cabin, while a starlight headliner adds a distinctive visual feature above the seats.
One of the most unusual additions is the control panel for the exterior lighting and cameras. Integrated into the driver’s sun visor, the system reveals a large screen, a panel of buttons, and two small toggle switches when flipped down.
The arrangement resembles equipment from a movie spy car. Additional security features include a locking safe that opens using biometric technology and ballistic armor added to the doors.
The Original Twin-Turbo V6 Engine Remains
Despite the extensive modifications, the engine appears to have remained largely unchanged. The MTN 550 Recon seems to retain the standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6.
The engine produces 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. While those figures provide substantial power, the SUV’s enormous wheels and tires could make additional engine output a welcome improvement.
With 40-inch tires, portal axles, upgraded suspension, heavy-duty exterior protection, thermal cameras, and a heavily customized interior, the Lexus GX 550 MTN 550 Recon takes the SUV’s off-road setup to an entirely different level.
